World-renowned tenor Tito Merelli, “Il Stupendo” has signed on to play Otello for one night only at the Cleveland Grand Opera Company in the fall of 1934. He arrives late and, through a hilarious series of mishaps, passes out after a huge dose of tranquilizers. Believing his star is dead, the excitable opera manager taps his hapless young assistant, an aspiring singer named Max, to suit up as the Moor and replace Merelli. Things turn outrageously funny when Il Stupendo revives, and the tenor’s jealous wife, his ambitious female co-star, Max’s girlfriend and the flirtatious head of the opera guild compete for the star’s attention. This classic farce, a 1989 masterpiece of comedy, has been translated into 16 languages and produced in 25 countries.
