Elwood P. Dowd and Harvey, his imaginary six-and-a-half-foot tall rabbit, are the embarrassment of his family. His sister, Veta, tries to have him committed to a sanitarium but she herself is committed when in a frantic explanation, she admits that she becomes so distressed that she herself sees Harvey from time to time. The truth comes out; Veta is freed and the search for Elwood is on. He eventually arrives at the sanitarium of his own volition, looking for Harvey. But it seems that Elwood and his invisible companion have had a strange influence on the others. Maybe everyone needs a Harvey in their life after all.
