LaJuné McMillian: The Portal’s Keeper—Origins is an engaging exhibition at the Frist Art Museum that showcases the multifaceted work of New York-based artist LaJuné McMillian. Running from September 27, 2024, to January 5, 2025, the exhibition features multimedia projections, sculptural installations, and holographic self-portraits that explore themes of Black freedom and movement. Utilizing motion-capture technology, McMillian presents dynamic environments where Black dancers and performers express liberation through movement, accompanied by soundscapes and poetic elements. The centerpiece, Spirit and Child, invites viewers into an immersive experience of pain and recovery, highlighting the interplay between technology and the celebration of Black existence.
