The Best Broadway Shows of All Time

Broadway has been at the pinnacle of global theatre for centuries. Even with today’s digital entertainment, it has kept the allure of theatrical art alive. We’ve been blessed with several masterpieces over the years and today, we dig into those we believe deserve to be considered among the best Broadway shows of all time.

Guys and Dolls

In Guys and Dolls, gamblers and dreamers cross paths in the bustling streets of New York City. Sky Masterson, a suave high-roller, accepts one of the most daring betting offers of his life - win the heart of Sarah Brown, a devout missionary with no time for his charms. Meanwhile, Nathan Detroit scrambles to keep his infamous floating crap game alive. Amid love, luck, and high-stakes drama, the characters navigate intriguing temptations that shape their destinies.

Hamilton

Hamilton, the story of the man on the 10-dollar bill, has been a Broadway sensation since its premiere. It has revolutionized musical theatre with its unique storytelling and musical fusion. The show's cultural impact is so profound that even political opposites like Barack Obama and Dick Cheney have found common ground in their admiration for the Lin-Manuel Miranda production. In 2016, Hamilton won 11 Tony Awards, falling just one short of tying the record for most Tonys won by a musical.

The Phantom of the Opera

In The Phantom of the Opera, a promising young opera singer meets a mysterious figure claiming to be the Angel of Music, sent by her late father. This captivating story has resonated with audiences worldwide, making Phantom the longest-running Broadway show and the musical with the most performances. Its global appeal is further evidenced by numerous international revivals, and the production has garnered seven Tony Awards.

The Lion King

The Lion King has been ruling Broadway since 1997 and has raked in nearly two billion dollars in revenue to date! Based on the iconic 1994 animated film, the show compensates for its somewhat one-dimensional narrative with breathtaking spectacle. The stagecraft is nothing short of astonishing, from the unforgettable opening—where actor-animals make their entrance down the aisles accompanied by powerful South African chants—to the final curtain.

The Producers

Based on Mel Brooks' uproarious film of the same name, the musical The Producers follows a producer and an accountant as they hatch a scheme to create the world's worst musical. Their chosen masterpiece, “Springtime for Hitler: A Gay Romp with Eva and Adolf at Berchtesgaden”, is described by its Nazi playwright as “a love letter to Hitler”. This comedic masterpiece holds the record for the most Tony Awards ever received, with a staggering 12 to its name.

Les Misérables

Les Misérables, often shortened to Les Mis, is a sweeping, sung-through epic set against the backdrop of the French Revolution. The story follows Jean Valjean, imprisoned for stealing a loaf of bread, as he struggles to escape his past after his release. This enduringly popular production currently holds the distinction of being the fifth longest-running Broadway musical.

Wicked

Wicked offers a dazzling theatrical production, from its intricate set design to its powerful musical score. Based on Gregory Maguire's novel, the musical presents a fresh perspective on the story of Elphaba, the green-skinned Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz. This innovative take on the classic tale casts Elphaba as a sympathetic protagonist, who develops an unexpected bond with Glinda the Good Witch.

West Side Story

West Side Story is a timeless tale of love caught in the crossfire of gang rivalry on New York City's West Side. This modern adaptation of Romeo and Juliet tells the story of a romance between a young Italian man and a Puerto Rican woman, set against a backdrop of urban conflict. Featuring unforgettable songs like "Maria", "I Feel Pretty", and "Tonight", West Side Story premiered in 1957 and has since been adapted into a celebrated film, directed by none other than the legendary Steven Spielberg.
