Although rare due to its minor key, a distinct first Viennese school sonata, sets the violin part mainly as an accompaniment to the piano part. Schnberg took inspiration from this in his work, turning the tables around for his virtuosic Phantasy, for which he wrote the piano part only just after completing the solo violin part in 1949. After returning to Russia in the 1930s, the homesick Prokofiev wrote his Sonata Op.80 in response to Stalins terrorising tyranny and carries with it notes of pain and despair caused by a turbulent time in which coming home didnt equal either sense of happiness or relief.This recital programme is intended to reflect on the very human experience of homesickness, the inevitability of loss and pain, and the ultimate longing for a better world.
